How to know when it’s time to call a handyman?

Many people enjoy doing a bit of DIY around the home, from putting together cabinets from Ikea or putting up paintings, but sometimes you need to call in the professionals. Here are four times when you know it’s time to call for a quote.

When you don’t have the expertise

Handymen have a broad skillset with knowledge built up over many years. BBOJ’s multitrade handymen have the expertise and experience to perform a vast array of tasks around a property, from repairing old wooden sash windows, to fixing leaking pipes, or installing new light fixtures. It is certainly possible to learn many of these skills online thanks to a wealth of free YouTube videos, but the reality is that becoming proficient at any one of these tasks can take many hours or learning and practice. And if you need a job done now, then it may well be a better use of your time and money to pay for a professional handyman to do it for you rather than trying to learn a skill that you may never need to use again.

When you don’t have the right tools

Over the years most people will have built up a collection of tools for fixing bits and bobs around the house, from a selection of screw drivers to put together furniture or a drill to put up shelves. However, when a task requires more specialist and advanced tools like a wallpaper stripper, belt sander, or jigsaw it may be time to call in a professional handyman to help.

You could buy the tools yourself or rent them from a tool hire specialist, but instead of facing the stress and expense of finding the right tool and then spending hours on YouTube trying to find a tutorial on how to best utilise it, you could likely save a significant amount of money by paying a reliable local handyman to take care of it all for you.

When you don’t have the time

There is never enough time in the day. Between work, looking after the kids, and trying to keep the house tidy and clean few of us have the time to devote to major DIY projects. You may be able to squeeze in an hour or two on the weekend to put up a shelf or fix the garden fence, but do you really have time to repaint the whole sitting room or learn how to securely replace a window lock? By employing a professional handyman to do these jobs for you, you know they will be done to the highest standards and will also be finished more quickly than you could do them yourself.

When the project is too big to do alone

Assembling a new flatpack TV unit may be a one-man job, but when you need to make a whole series of changes at once – such as repainting and redecorating a room, assembling a new kitchen, or updating a bathroom then unless you can have that room out of action for months then you need a team of people working on the job together.

If you had a job that required 32 hours of labour to complete, then if you could only fit in two hours every Saturday and Sunday, then it would take you four months to get the job done on your own. However, if you employed a team of three or four handymen you might be able to have the whole job completed in just a day or two. Many hands really do make light work, and even better if those hands are of skilled and knowledgeable handymen.
